Pregnancy is the happiest excuse for feeling like crap!

We have always come across people who have been talking about how pregnancy is the most beautiful feeling. How it transforms you into a better feeling.

But are you aware of the issues faced during pregnancy? Is it really so beautiful and loving as explained by people?

Pregnancy leads to change in hormones which can have life-transforming effects. The changes can range from common expected ones to the ones which are less familiar. During pregnancy, women perceive the world through the sense of smell, taste, and sight. The body fat increases and there are psychological changes to the uterus and breast.

Amidst the chaos one face and high attention on increasing body fat, the one thing which completely goes unattended is proper oral care. Your mouth also experiences various changes during pregnancy. It may happen that these changes create panic, amongst them to be mothers, but they need to know that these changes are normal and can be experienced during pregnancy.

The Oral Changes Faced During Pregnancy

1. Tooth Sensitivity

During pregnancy, your teeth become extra sensitive. You can feel a throbbing pain, the one you have never experienced ever. Your teeth become way too sensitive to cold beverage or sweets. The rise in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone is the reason for the same. The hormonal change makes your blood sugar level go up which sends blood to your gums leading to sensitivity.

2. Tooth Pain

As the blood flow level increases, the pressure on your tooth also increases which make it more prone to pain. In pregnant women, sensitivity elevates the pain which sometimes spread to the adjacent teeth. The pain can sometimes so unbearable that it becomes difficult to chew your regular food. This becomes highly discomforting leading to stress which is not a good sign during pregnancy.

3. Loose Teeth

If you thought that sensitivity and tooth pain are the only concerns during pregnancy then think again? Pregnancy relaxes your muscles which extends even to your gums. This gum relaxation can loosen your teeth. Relax and don’t freak out because you will never actually lose your teeth.

4. Swollen or Bleeding Gums

The increase in blood flow level pushes the blood to gums which makes them swollen. They may appear to be red in color and can be painful. In some instances, you can even experience your blood bleeding from the gums. Many pregnant ladies may also develop gingivitis which is an early stage of gum disease.

The points raised above are what you might experience during pregnancy. But there is nothing to worry about. Following a simple healthy regime can help prevent the above-said issues.

  • Brush twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush. Do not be too harsh while brushing and be gentle. Do not skip this regime even you feel pain due to swollen gum.
  • Use a sensitive toothpaste. As discussed you might feel sensitivity during pregnancy. In that case use toothpaste which is made especially for sensitive teeth. This will lessen the pain and swelling in your gums.
  • Use mouth appliances such as mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth.
  • Practice rinsing with salt water. This allows the bacterias in your mouth to heal quickly and prevent from cavities. It is a safer option for pregnant ladies
  • Healthy Diet. Take a healthy and balanced diet. This will not only help your baby to be fit and healthy but will help your overcome issues faced during pregnancy.
  • Avoid junk food as intake of the same can harm your baby and can even cause triggers.
