Even people who attend regular health checkups often tend to neglect eye exams. However, seeing an ophthalmologist regularly can ensure your eye health as well as your overall wellbeing. Here are just a few reasons why you should never skip your routine eye exam.

They Allow Early Glaucoma Diagnosis

Of all eye diseases, glaucoma is probably the most dangerous and definitely the sneakiest. It usually starts without any discernible symptoms, and there’s nothing to alert you of your possible disease. Most people who suffer from glaucoma only become aware of it after it has caused serious and irreparable vision loss. Once that happens, preventing further vision damage is very difficult. The disease can even lead to blindness if not controlled with medication or surgery. However, routine eye exams can greatly help with early diagnosis. There is
high eye pressure (ocular hypertension) and other factors that allow professionals to catch the disease and ensure you keep your vision.

They Ensure Your Eyes Are Healthy

Many other eye conditions besides glaucoma don’t come with obvious symptoms. You can have an eye problem you are not even aware of, so having regular eye exams is crucial to keeping your eyes healthy. Your eye exam involves a vision checkup, but also thorough eye assessment with your specialist recommending and prescribing treatment if need be.

They Help Diagnose Other Health Issues

Many people who suffer from serious health condition first learn of them during their eye exam. Our eyes are like the windows to our overall health. For instance, during an eye exam, your doctor will evaluate the health of the blood vessels in your eyes, which is a great predictor of the condition of the blood vessels throughout your body. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can all be visible when looking at the retinal blood supply and blood vessels. Even some forms of cancer can be caught by an experienced ophthalmologist.

They Make Sure You Have Correct Glasses and Contacts

Constantly wearing incorrect glasses and contacts can not only strain your eyes and provide subpar vision, but also further damage your sight. But, if you have regular eye exams, your specialist will ensure that your seeing aids are suitable and fitted correctly. Once you know your exact prescription, you can even
grab your contact lenses online and know you’ll have the right type of lens. Today you have a vast range of different contact lenses to choose from, so you’re bound to find something that fits your lifestyle. Your ophthalmologist will also be happy to provide you with information concerning the contact choice and proper contact care.

They Help You Be Better at Work and in School

Almost every task at work and at school requires good vision. We constantly work with visual aids, use screens, read and write stuff down. All of these actions can be much easier if you have good vision and minimal eye strain. When your eyes are tired and hurting, it can be quite hard to concentrate on the task at hand. So, make sure everyone in your family has regular eye exams in order to excel at work, in school and other activities.

They Will Ensure You’re Legal to Drive

Did you know that legal driving requirements demand that all drivers are able to see a number plate from 20 meters or 65 feet? If you don’t fulfill those requirements, you can lose your license, face prosecution and even lose your job if you work in an industry that includes regular vehicle operation. The main issue is that vision degradation is often slow and gradual, so it can be quite hard to catch it without regular eye exams. So, get your eyes checked annually and get proper seeing aids.

Your Eyes Are Always Changing

Age, medical conditions and general wear and tear all affect your eyes every day. Your eyesight and eye health are always changing, so it’s really important to see your ophthalmologist regularly and check if your vision is changing. Some lifestyle choices and work requirements can also affect your vision, so seek advice from your specialist on how to
prevent vision deterioration.

No matter how busy you are, you can always save the date and see your eye specialist once a year. Even if you have 20/20 vision, you can still benefit from eye exams and protect your overall health and wellbeing.

  1. I agree that seeing an ophthalmologist regularly can lessen your risk of having eye problems in the future. Thanks for pointing out the importance of early diagnosis that can be detected through regular eye exams. My mother is 40 years old and she is complaining about her blurry vision since last year. I think there’s already a need for me to have her visit an eye doctor to check the cause of the issue. I will also visit an eye doctor regularly moving forward.
