You want to make sure that your furnace will run well all through the winter. It is best to replace it before fall starts if it needs to be replaced, rather than wait until the weather is cold and you really need to use it. Know the signs of a furnace that has done its job and needs to be replaced.

Look for Rust and Cracks on the Exterior of the Furnace

As you are considering whether or not it is time for a new furnace installation, you should take time to actually examine the exterior of your current one. Look at the system and see if there is a lot of rust on it. Look for any cracks in the system that might lead to issues. Examine it to see if it seems to be in good shape or if it is looking like it might fall apart any day. Many people don’t think to look around their furnace for signs of significant wear. It’s a good idea to do this at the end of each summer though.

Consider the Age of Your Furnace

If you know when the furnace in your home was purchased, you can figure out if that needs to be replaced. Most of them will need to be replaced before they are twenty years old. If you purchased your home decades ago and the furnace was already in place then, it is probably time for you to have the furnace replaced.

Check Out Your Energy Bills from Previous Winters

A good furnace will run efficiently and keep your home warm without making your energy bill too high. When you look at your bills from previous winters, you may see that the price that you paid went up as time went on. This could be a sign of a system that is not working efficiently and that needs to be replaced.

Think Back to the Previous Winter and Any Noise Your Furnace Made When Running

If a furnace makes a lot of noise while it is running, there is a good chance that something is wrong with it and it needs to be replaced. When you think back to the previous winter, you should be able to remember if it made any weird noises and if you were concerned about it at all back then. If you can’t remember if your furnace was making any strange noises, then get it running in your home for a few minutes and see how well it is able to start up and listen for unusual noises.

You should figure out if your furnace is going to last another winter or not before fall starts. Take time to consider the furnace so that you know if you need to order a replacement. If you already know you will need to replace yours, do it before the temperatures drop. This will save you money and ensure your home is comfortable for you and your family while it’s cold outside.
