Like almost everyone, chances are you want to look and feel as good as possible. One of the best ways to accomplish this is by maintaining a healthy weight, which sometimes can be easier said than done. Since doing so all boils down to how many calories you should eat each day, you may be curious as to just how many calories you should eat per pound of body weight. If so, here are the facts you need to know.
Maintaining Your Current Weight
If you are currently satisfied with your current weight and want to make sure you maintain it, it’s actually quite easy to figure out how many calories you will need each day. To do so, simply take your current weight and multiply it by 10. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds and multiply this by 10, this will equal 1,500, meaning you will need to eat at least 1,500 calories per day to keep your current weight.
Your Activity Level
When figuring out how many calories you need to eat per pound, it is also important to consider your daily activity level. If you get less than 30 minutes of exercise daily, you should eat about 15 calories for every pound of body weight. Should you get 30-60 minutes of physical activity daily, the number jumps to 15-19 calories per pound. Should you be a very active person and get 60-90 minutes of physical activity each day, you will probably need 19-21 calories per pound.
Fad Diets
If you have fallen victim to fad diets now and then, you know how bad these can be for your health. In fact, many people who seek out treatment options for eating disorders do so because they started on a fad diet and let it get beyond their control. While fad diets often recommend you eat as little as 1,000 calories per day, remember this is not considered to be a healthy amount of calories for most adults. In addition, fad diets are not sustainable. Most people report having gained back all of the lost weight or even gain more weight after completing the diet.
Losing Weight
Finally, if you want to lose a few pounds but want to do so in a healthy and safe way, the best thing to do is to cut about 500 calories from your diet each day. By doing so, you should be able to lose about one pound per week, while at the same time still feeling full and healthy.
Treatment Options
When it comes to eating and dieting, people may wonder if they need help from a professional. Unfortunately, eating disorders are very common, especially among those concerned about calories. With that being said, there are many treatment options for eating disorders that can be catered to your needs. If you feel like you may have an eating disorder, it is worth talking to a professional. That way you can get the support and direction needed to be healthier and happier.
If you use common sense each day when deciding what to eat, you should be able to maintain a healthy weight and still look and feel great.
