Just like any other home appliance, HVAC systems also need proper care and maintenance to perform optimally. If, after turning the device on, you realize it’s not blowing cool or warm air, the first thing that comes to mind is calling an HVAC contractor. While some HVAC problems require professional assistance, some maintenance can be handled by yourself. Below are a few simple fixes that you can do to regain normalcy.

Reset the Thermostat

Many people will assume their HVAC has a problem once they notice it isn’t heating or cooling. Before you assume so, it’s wise that you first troubleshoot the thermostat. Modern programmable thermostats can sometimes be complicated. Since the thermostat is the brain of HVAC, if it’s not set right, nothing else will work. Therefore, you can do simple fixes like switching on the furnace switch and resetting the temperature settings.

Change Furnace Filter

The other common problem that affects most HVAC is blockages/clogging of the furnace filter. When the filter is clogged, the rate of airflow will definitely be affected, and air won’t pass through the vents. If you have the right tools, you can change the filter and turn it in the correct direction for maximum and efficient airflow.

Turn on the Circuit Breaker

A circuit breaker is often designed to interrupt the flow of current upon detecting a fault. Through this, it prevents your HVAC appliance from being damaged by over-current. If you notice power not reaching your appliance, the chances are that the circuit breaker was turned off due to power overload. Therefore, you can flip it back on to get the HVAC running again. Otherwise, if this doesn’t fix the problem, you can call a technician for assistance.

Inspect Your Condenser

The condenser is an important component of an HVAC system. It makes the refrigerant more efficient by cooling it beyond its saturation temperature. Usually, the condenser will be located outside the house, where it collects or releases heat depending on the season. During your inspection, confirm that the condenser is level on its concrete pad and there’s no debris, vegetation, or any obstruction that will inhibit free airflow.

Clean Evaporator Coil

Evaporator coils play a critical role in the functioning of your HVAC. It is in the coils that air exchange takes place. When dirt settles on these coils, it barricades its surface. This prevents the coils from absorbing and releasing heat hence causing inefficiencies. Therefore, cleaning off the dirt buildup on the coils improves the HVACs efficiency and functionality. While larger debris can be handpicked, using a special brush and then applying self-rinsing oil is more effective.

HVAC appliances require proper maintenance for optimum functionality. If you notice your appliance is not serving its purpose, you can try the above-mentioned simple fixes and see whether it gets back to work. But before you do these tricks, make sure you turn the power off to avoid electrocution. Also, if you apply the fixes and still notice no changes, then you can contact an HVAC contractor for technical assistance.
