Boating is a fun way to enjoy the water, whether you’re out for an afternoon of fishing, a weekend trip with friends, or just a quick spin around the lake. But with the fun of boating comes the responsibility of keeping you and your passengers safe. Although boating can be mainly safe, boat accidents aren’t that uncommon.

Having a boat maintenance and safety plan should not only be a priority but it should also be very thorough. For example, forgetting simple equipment like bumpers for boats can result in damage when docking. That’s why understanding the basic safety tips is crucial for every boater. In this article, we will go over several tips to keep you and your family safe on the water.

1. Check the Weather

Before setting out on any boating adventure, it’s essential to check the weather forecast. The open water can be unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. A sunny day can quickly become stormy, making it difficult, if not dangerous, to navigate. The idea is to avoid getting caught in hazardous conditions.

It’s not just about checking any weather source, though. For boating, it’s best to consult reliable marine weather information. These sources offer specific details about water conditions, wind patterns, and other marine-related forecasts that regular weather reports might overlook.

It’s a good idea to always have a backup plan for when the weather turns bad unexpectedly even when you’ve done your homework. This may mean having a route mapped out for a safe harbor or having contact with other boaters to help you out.

2. Inspect Safety Equipment

One of the key aspects of boating safety revolves around having the right safety equipment onboard.

Lifejackets are non-negotiable. They come in various types designed for different activities, from relaxed sailing to intense water sports. It’s important to check them before setting out so you know they fit properly. A well-fitting life jacket ensures that, if someone ends up in the water, it keeps them afloat in the correct position.

In addition to lifejackets, having throwable devices can be lifesavers. These are designed to be tossed to someone in distress to help keep them afloat. Alongside these, fire extinguishers are essential to combat unexpected fires, and flares can be used to signal for help if you’re stranded or in distress.

3. Have a Man Overboard Procedure

Knowing what to do if somebody falls off the boat can mean the difference between life and death. If someone falls overboard, the first and most crucial step is to shout “Man overboard!” This alerts everyone on the boat to the situation, and it’s important even if you think everyone has already noticed.

The next step is to throw a lifebuoy or any other floatation device near the person in the water.

As this is happening, the boat’s engine should be slowed down, and the boat should be turned around to approach the person from the leeward side, ensuring that the boat doesn’t drift onto the person.
