Nothing lifts a party like some good drinks. If you’re new to the world of entertaining, you might not know how to make cocktails. Even some reliable and basic cocktails can look spectacular. Below are six easy-to-make cocktails that are sure to impress your guests.
1. The Mojito
The Mojito is a popular drink that reminds many of tropical vacations. While it has an interesting history, even used as a medicine once, many just enjoy the taste. The lime, sugar, and mint help tone down the harsh alcohol. All you need for this recipe is club soda, rum, lime, mint, and some ice cubes.
Some people choose to muddle the mint while others delicately place it on top. After muddling the mint, if you choose to do so, add rum, lime, sugar, and ice, and shake the mixture. Some people swap regular white sugar out with a simple syrup or turbinado sugar. Pour the mixture over fresh ice, and pour the carbonated water in last to keep your Mojito extra bubbly. Finally, garnish with lime and mint.
2. The Bloody Mary
Brunch and Bloody Marys go hand in hand, so if you’re big on hosting Sunday brunch, you need to know how to make this drink. While there are almost infinite recipes for this drink, with some adding Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, and paprika, you don’t need all these ingredients to make a good cocktail.
All need is your favorite tomato juice, a dash of Tabasco, black pepper, and a splash of vodka. If you want to really impress your friends, add some garnishes. Salt the rim of the glasses with sea salt or celery salt, and add a garnish like pickled cucumber or celery stalks.
3. Sex on the Beach
An oldie but goodie, you definitely need to know who to make a Sex on the Beach. This summer-time favorite can be made to suit just about everyone’s taste. Just fill a tall glass with ice and an ounce of vodka and a splash of peach Schnapps from the liquor store. Fill the remainder of the glass with equal parts of pulp-free orange juice and cranberry juice. Other variations of this drink use pineapple juice, coconut rum, or grenadine.
4. Negroni
Just because you’re not in Italy doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a Negroni. Brother to the Aperol Spritz, the Negroni adds sophistication to any affair. Keep in mind that the flavor of Negroni is an acquired one, so if you’re not a fan of vermouth or gin, you can always use less of those and simply add more Campari.
With only three ingredients, the Negroni is exceedingly easy to make. Combine gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth in equal parts. Stir with ice and garnish with a twist of orange.
5. The Cosmopolitan
Even if you’re not a Sex in the City fan, nothing says New York City like a well-made cosmopolitan. This classic is easy to prepare and makes any type of get together extra. The basic cosmopolitan is made with a base of triple sec, vodka, and cranberry juice. It may also have some lime juice added as well. Because this is such a popular drink, especially in the last few decades, there are many variations.
6. The Shirley Temple
Shirley Temples aren’t usually alcoholic—in fact, they’re often served to children—so non-drinking friends can enjoy this pretty pink cocktail. You can also add rum or vodka if you want an alcoholic version of the drink.
Mix lime juice and grenadine and pour the mix over ice, then add ginger ale or a similar soda. Stir the drink a little, and garnish with maraschino cherries and a straw.
Whether you’re hosting a party or just trying to prep for the warm months ahead, mastering these six cocktails are guaranteed to wow your friends.
