When looking for hospice care for a loved one, it is critical to ask the right questions. Not all hospices are created equal, and you want to find the best one for your needs. Here are five questions to ask a hospice service during an interview.

1. What Are Your Credentials?

The first question you should ask a hospice service provider is about their credentials. Determine the staff’s level of training and experience. You should also ensure that the hospice is Joint Commission accredited. Unaccredited hospices may not meet the same standards as accredited hospices and are more likely to close. Not being accredited also means you run the risk of hiring a caregiver who is not qualified to handle emergencies or notice important medical issues that could arise.

2. What Services Do You Offer?

Because not all hospices provide the same services, you should inquire about the services provided by the hospice you’re considering. Some hospices provide only basic care, whereas others provide more comprehensive care, such as counseling or home health aides. Some providers, such as Good Heart Hospice, also offer foot care or other specialized treatments. Assess the specific needs of your loved one. This way you ensure you’re hiring a provider that can offer the specialized care they need.

3. How Do You Work With Families?

Hospice care is for the entire family, not just the patient. Find out how the hospice you’re thinking about working with families works. You want to ensure that they understand and support your needs. Family is the most important thing during this hard time, and you need to know that the healthcare you select will be with you. There may be some group counseling offered to help you and your family cope during this difficult time.

4. What Are Your Policies?

Learn about the procedures in place. For example, what is their pain management policy? What will happen if the patient’s condition worsens? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you make a more informed decision about which hospice is best for you. Failure to ask these questions may result in later regret because you may not be satisfied with the guidelines after your loved one has been admitted. Be sure you know their contact policies as well to know when they’ll inform you of your loved one’s condition if they live outside of your home. If you want to be informed daily or weekly of your loved one’s condition, ensure they offer the type of communication you’re expecting.

5. Do You Have Any Special Programs?

Some hospices provide special programs for groups such as veterans or people who have Alzheimer’s. If you or a loved one fits into one of these categories, find out if the hospice you’re considering using has a program that can meet your needs. This question allows you to understand better what the hospice can provide for you and your family.

Asking these questions during a hospice service interview will help you narrow down your options and find the best care for your loved one. The care team can guide you through the decision-making process and answer any questions you may have.
