Summer is finally on the horizon. After a chilly winter and a dreary spring, we’re all ready to spend some time outside in the sun. That fun comes at a steep price: sun exposure is the number one cause of skin damage and aging. Use these four tips to minimize damage without sacrificing your summer fun.
1. Always Wear Sunscreen
This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Since sunlight damages the skin more than anything else, wearing sunscreen is the best way to keep your skin looking youthful for as long as possible.
When choosing a sunscreen, don’t just go for the one with the best protection. Be realistic and pick the one that you are most likely to wear every day. Read reviews and test out different textures. A lightweight gel moisturizer with added SPF isn’t the absolute best sun protection on the market, but if you enjoy wearing it, that’s better than forcing yourself to wear a heavy formulation that you won’t stick with for very long. Wearing sunscreen is a long-term game. You have to wear it consistently for it to make a difference. You may also want to be mindful of the ingredients in the sunscreen you wear. Make sure your skin won’t have any reactions to certain chemicals and try to keep it as natural as possible.
2. Lighten up on Your Moisturizer
The skin produces more of its natural oils during the summer months, so your rich face creams might be too much during this time of year. It will feel especially heavy on the skin if you’re layering sunscreen over it. Even worse, wearing heavy skincare while you’re sweating can lead to breakouts. Switch to a gel moisturizer or even a lightweight serum until the weather gets cooler. If you like to wear makeup daily, consider using a light tinted moisturizer to replace your foundation as well.
3. Focus on Hydration
While your skin won’t need extra oil moisture, it may need additional water hydration. Sun exposure and sweating cause the skin to lose water. Keep a hydrating mist in your beach bag and give your face a spritz every so often. Look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. They draw water out of the air and into the deepest layers of the skin.
4. Wear Sunglasses
This tip is about more than great summer style. The skin around your eyes is especially susceptible to sun damage because it is so thin and delicate. Sunscreen isn’t enough. You need a physical barrier between your eye area and the UV rays. Sunglasses also prevent you from squinting in the sunlight, reducing the incidence of new fine lines.
No one likes to think about the negative side effects of having fun outdoors, but following these four tips is a necessary evil if you want to preserve your skin. Regularly see your dermatologist and take those few extra minutes to smooth on your sunscreen before you grab your shades and head to the beach. In ten years, your skin will thank you!
