How-to-Find-and-Stick-to-Your-Signature-Style

Nowadays, having an established style that epitomizes who you are as a person is more important than ever. We live in a world in which authenticity is paramount in every aspect, and your clothes need to say something about you. More specifically, they need to tell the world who you are and where you’re going. An outfit is far more than the sum of its parts. However, finding the one and sticking to it is a more difficult feat to achieve than it may seem. Therefore, you need to sit down, think hard, find out who you are and take it from there. Of course, we’re here to lend a helping hand, and sooner than later, you’ll be strutting around in outfits so original and unique that will make Carrie Bradshaw pale in comparison.

Take a Deep Look Inside

When you open your wardrobe, focus and try to really pin down the items you feel most drawn to. Then take those pieces out and figure out which style they belong to. Are they clean minimalistic ones or perhaps extravagant statement items? Would you like to wow people with your print mixing skills or would you prefer to keep it nice and simple – as minimalists do? Don’t worry, you don’t have to pigeonhole yourself. You can choose to keep (and purchase) items that belong to several different fashion movements – that is how the best and most distinct styles are created. You do, however, need to land on a few that mesh well together. You can, for instance, combine athleisure with either statement dressing or minimalism, but you simply can’t make bohemian work with sharp and smart. Again, your style should be a reflection of you and your lifestyle, so when choosing lanes, you need to factor those elements in. After all, you can’t be running around and taking the subway to work in Carolina Herrera dresses or FentyxPuma experimental athleisure pieces.

If the Well Runs Dry

If you’re stuck and fresh out of inspiration, think of your favorite fashion bloggers, Instagram influencers and even celebrities. Make a Pinterest board comprised of your favorite looks, and that should give you a pretty good picture of where you want to go. Do you see yourself casually smart like Victoria Beckham? Perhaps Jennifer Aniston’s casual laidback style is more you. Or, you can take a completely different route and adopt Alexa Chung’s hipster-chic look. Perhaps it’s Blake Lively’s closet you would most rather raid. You won’t know until you have a complete visual in front of you, so start making that board. It will clear your mind and steer you in the right direction.

A Clean Sweep

Now that you have figured out what you want to look like on a daily basis, it’s time to get rid of the items that might get in the way of that goal. Everything that doesn’t mesh with your vision should be sold or donated – in the spirit of sustainability, don’t throw things away. There is always some charity which will take them, and you can even make money selling your clothes – just because they don’t fit into your big picture, doesn’t mean someone else won’t go crazy over them.

Take the Plunge

Before we get to shopping, let’s see if you can do something about your general look. Having a staple style isn’t just about clothes, it’s also about the hair, makeup, or even a piercing or a tattoo – all of these things say something about you. For instance, many people have gone completely crazy about the intricate Japanese tattoos that signify some kind of change in their life. This is definitely something that would set you apart from the crowd – meaningful signature ink.

Piercings in interesting places are super cool as well, along with interesting and unique jewelry, and even a haircut that is totally you. Think about it – perhaps you’re meant to be a cute and edgy pixie girl with grey hair and all this time you’ve been walking around with long brown hair and just not feeling it. Think about makeup as well. Some people, let’s take Gwen Stefani as an example. The woman has been rocking platinum blond curls, red lips, and perfect eyeliner for decades now – it’s become part of her identity. Therefore, make it your mission to find your go-to signature makeup look, as it will help you establish the rest of it immensely. Again, dig deep and find what look depicts the true you.

Now It’s Time to Have Some Fun

When rebuilding your entire wardrobe and either creating or solidifying your chosen style, it’s highly important not to be stingy when it comes to shopping, at least in the staple pieces department. Never purchase cheap boots, bags, outerwear, and basics such as jeans, knitwear, blazers, and tees. These pieces represent the foundation of your style, and they will serve you for years to come, so don’t be afraid of splurging on them. It’s all about quality, and if you have ten high-quality pieces, it’s far better than owning fifty cheaper ones.

Keep Your Eyes Open

Just because you have a vision of what your style should be and you have already entered the ‘execution’ stage, this doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a trendy item or two every now and then. The important thing is to not let yourself fall prey to every trend that comes strutting down the runway. Look at the runways, see what’s hot and then make your judgment as to which of the trends – (from animal print, logos, florals, polka dots, ruffles, and numerous others) fit into your style seamlessly without causing interruption.

Finally, spend as little as possible on trendy items, as they will go out of style in a matter of one or two seasons, and always estimate how well a new trend can be incorporated into your style without compromising it before committing to a purchase. Good luck.
