“Love does not just sit there, like a stone. It has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new”

– Ursula K. Le Guin

At the incipient stages of a relationship, most couples would bring out the big guns in trying to surprise each other.

This is understandable, as apart from getting to know each other, both of you want to leave a lasting impression that would hopefully grow and develop into a full-fledged relationship. However, when you are in a long-term relationship, date nights can easily feel like work and what used to be steak and dinners to your favorite nuvali restaurants would now devolve into lazing on the couch, eating day-old popcorn and watching Netflix. This is not to say that simple and straightforward dates are not any fun at all, but if you and your partner no longer wish to invest any genuine effort to keep the spark alive between you two, you can easily see the romance fizzling out. Maybe the both of you are just in a rut, but that should absolutely be no excuse to slack around when it comes to maintaining the romance and magic.

Sure, the first stage of a relationship is true bliss and inimitable but keeping the love alive after years of being together is incomparable and the foundation of a solid and strong relationship. So, if you wish to spice it up a little, put in a little effort, be spontaneous and go beyond looking up Greenbelt Movie Schedules. Here are some of the ways you can say “I love you” to your lover on your date nights:

1. Surprise each other

Add a touch of mystery to your dates by injecting an element of surprise. On your next date, plan something different and give your lover a night that is filled with surprises. Do not reveal to them where you are going until you are already there. Some of the things you can do to surprise your beau are to take them to see a concert of their favorite band, take them to see their favorite sports team play a game or prepare their favorite dinner for them at home—complete with all the works. Keeping them on their toes and not revealing anything would only add to the excitement and make the night all the more fun. Furthermore, they will appreciate the grand gesture of making them feel extra special.

2. Share something sweet

Sweets such as chocolates and candies are treats associated with romance—so much so that they have long been believed to activate the hormone oxytocin—the love chemical if you may. With this in mind, take your lover to the newest dessert shop in town or to the sweetest spot at the very least and treat them to a round of sweet treats and desserts. Indulge your sweet tooth, make your bellies happy and get high on high levels of oxytocin and love as well. Forget about your diet for at least one night and just enjoy a night of pandering yourself with decadent and sweet desserts.

3. Get warm

Heat things up a bit by heading up to the mountains and camping out. Light a bonfire, grab a thick woolen blanket and prepare to snuggle up with your lover. Alternatively, this is something you can do at the beach depending on the season and your preference. Cozy up to your bae, bring out the s’mores and other fireside treats and just spend the night gazing at the stars. Apart from this being the comfiest date you would probably ever have, you would be able to bask in the warmth of the fire and your relationship.

4. Take a class together

Overcoming a challenge together is one of the things that can solidify a relationship. This does not necessarily have to mean relationship conflicts and issues you and your beau have to hurdle. It can be a class such as a cooking lecture or art lessons that you and your lover can get involved in. Not only would this be an excellent way to spend time together, but both of you will learn something new as well.

5. Dress up

Sometimes, it takes something as easy as dressing up, primping and putting that extra effort to look nice for our lovers to spice things up in a relationship. It might have been that both of you are too busy at the end of the day that you cannot be bothered to look extra nice for a date. So, go ahead, apply that rouge, spray some perfume on and put on your best dress. Not only would you look stellar for your date, but you would certainly be surprised by how good you look.
